Baseball at Conastee Park was on the docket this evening as eight teams from our DP Upstate Fall League locked horns on this mild-October night. With only two weeks left in regular season, teams are looking to finish on a high note before heading into their off-season. Out of the 300+ players participating this year, over 100 were on display tonight.
Our first set of games featured Blue Ridge vs. Laurens #2 and Wade Hampton vs. Byrnes. Both affairs cruised through seven innings under two hours setting the stage for our nightcap games featuring Dorman vs. JL Mann and Laurens #1 vs. Chapman. After some very solid baseball was played on both fields, they each finished up strong getting everyone back on the road before 9:30. (Pictured, Wade Hampton's Chad Brown)
Tip-of-the-Cap I: Rarely do umpires get pats on the back. They are used to getting worn out from the first pitch until the last. Over the past seven seasons we have been fortunate enough to have the same faces do our Fall League and it all starts at the top with a man named Ray Mason. Personally, I first met Ray and his family when I scouted his two sons; Austin who is currently pitching in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization and Ryan who is playing at USC-Lancaster. A relationship that turned into business then eventually landed on lifelong friends. We have had our issues over the seasons but at the end of the day, Ray is going to make sure things get done correctly which is my kind of man. Sitting in my seat it is good to know we have people that have our back because they 'get' what we do. Tonight, out of the kindness of his heart, Ray sent two, three-man crews to work the games. This was unexpected and we can’t thank him or his guys more; not just for tonight but for the past seven campaigns all together.
Tip-of-the-Cap II: Another special thanks goes out to Jeff Young at The Hit House for the time and effort he put in to make all of these Conastee night’s happen. Yet another friend through baseball that supports what we do and is always there when we need a hand. Jeff did all the behind the scenes work to make Conastee night a success. Thanks again JY!
